The BBMAC’s therapy/warm water pool enables athletes or those with injuries to improve muscle movement, strength and endurance while decreasing pain. The 25-yard pool that can be heated to 86°, has six lane lines and is three-and-a-half to five-and-a-half feet deep. It also includes a flexible, moveable handicap-accessible lift.
The pool is often used by physical therapists who bring patients from the San Diego area in for rehabilitation recovery from surgery or trying to regain strength or motion in their neck, arms, hips and legs. The warm water enables recovering patients to maximize their physical capabilities safely, such as those healing from fractured bones, a recent surgery or suffer from arthritis.
Buoyancy provided by the warm water helps support the weight of the patient, reducing the force of stress placed on the joints which makes it easier to perform exercises. The viscosity of the warm water pool provides a great form of resistance. The resistance and buoyancy allows athletes and others to strengthen muscles without the need for weights.
Athletes or others with joint sprains or ligament tears also benefit from a therapy/warm water pool. The hydrostatic pressure of the warm water decreases joint and soft tissue swelling that can result after injury or with arthritic conditions or disorders. Warm water also relaxes muscles and vasodilates vessels, increasing blood flood to injured areas, helping those with muscle spasms, back pain and fibromyalgia.
The BBMAC’s close proximity to multiple hospitals and rehabilitation centers – and modern facilities with a pleasant, year-round climate – have made it an ideal setting for physical therapists and their patients.
